Kate Patterson
Originally from Virginia Beach, Yoga found Kate in 2001. Her early relationship with yoga remained on the physical plane until a medical scare in 2006 sent her to a dedicated and disciplined practice. Yoga became life. Actions and intentions began to align and she found herself in Todos Santos Mexico for her first 200 hour training with Yandara Yoga School. Immediately after the first training, Kate landed in Ft Lauderdale for her second 200 hour training with The Barkan Method.  Blessed with time and energy, Kate continued with her focus on studies and followed up with Jimmy Barkan’s Level 2 Vinyasa Training and Saul David Raye’s Thai Yoga Therapy Training. The following year was dedicated to traveling, learning, and absorbing as much as she could about this new way of life. Her travels took her across the country and eventually she landed in India to explore the essence and heart of yoga. It was in india where her path became clear. After returning to the states she relocated to Hawaii where she currently resides and operates True Union.

Her training and studies include Basic Hatha, Hot Yoga, Hot Vinyasa, Advanced Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, Iyengar alignment, Bhakti/Devotional Yoga, and Yoga Philosophy. Kate is certified in Thai Yoga Therapy and is also an ordained minister.  She is blessed to have practiced with and absorbed guidance from Jimmy Barkan, Saul David Raye, Rolf Gates, Paul Grilley, Annie Carpenter, Steve Ross, Shiva Rea, Mark Whitwell, Krishna Das, Johnny Kest and Desiree Rumbaugh.

Kate’s passion lies in Seva (service). Since the age of 18, Kate has been very active in her community through organizations such as Make a Wish Foundation, Team in Training, the Life Foundation, the Ronald McDonald  House, Volunteers for the Visually Handicapped, Citizens Committee to Protect the Elderly, The Whitman Walker Clinic and a number of others. The development of True Union’s non profit is underway, but in the meantime she has teamed up with lululemon as one of their Hawaii ambassadors to help spread yoga awareness through out her community.

With a focus on expanding yoga awareness, Kate has recently shifted her practice from teaching yoga classes locally to producing yoga events retreats, and trainings both in Hawaii and in her hometown of Virginia Beach, VA. After producing two small but extremely successful conference events, Kate has teamed up with Daphne Tse of the Balispirit Festival, and they are currently in the planning process for the Hawaii Spirit Festival in October 2010 and the East Coast Spirit Festival scheduled for May 2011. Recognizing both Virginia and Hawaii are a bit behind in the Yoga scene, both communities are buzzing with energy and seem more than ready to expand. These events will help facilitate that expansion. Kate’s intention with these festivals is to use yoga as an anchor, while accompanying it with workshops on music, dance and local/cultural awareness. In addition to the workshops, the events will include a large-scale musical event featuring a headliner in collaboration with local musicians to raise money for an environmental and/or conscious charity in each community (i.e. The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Kokua Foundation). These Festivals will offer yoga, music and health enthusiasts an opportunity to further explore the wide variety of holistic practices available, while providing economic support and cultural preservation within the local communities.  Kate is confident in the success of these events and continues to seek out opportunities in which she can facilitate yoga awareness and conscious, spiritual evolution.
