What is yoga?
Yoga is the sanskrit word for 'yoke" or "union".... specifically referring to the union between the individual spirit and Divine spirit. There are 8 limbs to the path of Yoga as offered by the ancient sage Patanjali.....Yamas (moral restrictions), Niyamas (moral guidelines), Asana (posture), Pranayama (energy/breath restriction), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (supreme bliss). Yoga, commonly mistaken for asana, consists of all aspects of the 8 limbs.
Yoga is a spiritual path, although it has been somewhat diluted over time. It is in fact a great way to stay in shape, to reconnect to the body and the breath, and to release stress and tension in our lives.... but ultimately, yoga is intended to reconnect us with our truest sense of Self.
